Last Season Recap
The 2023-24 season was a disappointing one for the Charlotte Hornets. LaMelo Ball’s ankle injury limited him to just 22 games, and without their star point guard, the team struggled mightily, winning only 21 games. Despite the setbacks, rookie Brandon Miller was a bright spot. As the No. 2 overall pick, he averaged 17.3 points per game, earning All-Rookie honors while shouldering much of the offensive load. Unfortunately, the Hornets extended their playoff drought to eight seasons.
Summer Summary
This offseason marked the first under new ownership by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, who handed the front office reins to Jeff Peterson in hopes of better decision-making. The Hornets replaced head coach Steve Clifford with Charles Lee, an assistant who brings championship experience from his stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics.
The Hornets used their No. 6 overall pick on Tidjane Salaun, a highly touted 19-year-old French forward with versatility and size. While he’s expected to spend significant time developing his game, he represents a key piece of Charlotte’s long-term vision. Josh Green also joined via trade, but he’ll need to earn his spot in the rotation after underperforming in Dallas.
Player Spotlight: Miles Bridges
The Hornets’ decision to extend Miles Bridges on a reported three-year deal was significant. From a basketball perspective, it was a smart move; Bridges averaged 21 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game last season, showing he’s one of their most well-rounded players. However, his off-court issues remain a concern after missing the entire 2022-23 season due to legal troubles and serving a 10-game suspension to start last season. His maturity and off-court behavior will be key to his future in the league.
Season Outlook
This season is less about contending for a playoff spot and more about setting the foundation for future success. LaMelo Ball remains the lone former All-Star on the roster, and his health will be critical to the Hornets’ competitiveness. Beyond that, the focus is on player development. Brandon Miller and Mark Williams will need to show growth, and the coaching staff will be tasked with improving the overall competitiveness of the team.
Realistically, the 2024-25 season will likely end with Charlotte eyeing a high pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. For now, the Hornets are more concerned with how their young core develops than with any immediate postseason ambitions.
